Speculation on events past- I imagine that the Molothos have made deals with species in exchange for helping eliminate targets? "Abandon your ally and we'll take you off the preferred target list for a millennia," or "We will allow you to seize this sphere of the targeted lesser species, allowing us to finish their destruction here," or whatever? Figuring that many species would sell out someone else in exchange for not being a Molothos target or in exchange for their own profit, allowing the quicker eliminating of more important enemies.

Yes, you can make that assumption. The Arena doesn't prevent tactics of intimidation.

Hm, and part of their thing is they're just reasonable enough to not cause huge alliances against them, unlike other attempted mass genocidal powers...

Yes, they're not stupid. They know they're not powerful enough -- yet -- to take on EVERYONE, and that even taking on one of the Great Factions will be problematic. (with them they'd never try the realspace invasion tactic; no way to conquer tens of thousands of established solar systems)

Best option would be to try and chip away at them challenge by challenge, while doing topsphere invasions?

Basically, yes. If you can secure all their Upper Spheres you can eventually force them to route all their Arena activity through Nexus Arena, which is highly constraining.

I imagine the death of a major faction must be a slow, sad, disheartening thing. First the upper sphere get cut off, economy and power suffers, the aggressor starts picking off the least defended spheres one by one at a gradual rate while they try and force challenges on the Arenaside...

Oh hey, mechanics question- if someone wins a sphere in a challenge and the topsphere is held by a third party, do they still have to push the third party off somehow?

Interesting question. In general, the Arena would PROBABLY not let you use a contested Sphere as a prize, just the way that banks look askance at you trying to sell a house by yourself when someone else has a lien on it. If it's your ONLY Sphere you can't LOSE it in Challenge. So basically the question would only come up if you had multiple Spheres and ALL of them were currently contested. Your Challenger might be given the option and might decide that the situation means that your Sphere's worth only half what it would be, so they would demand two. Et Cetera.

So... once all spheres are contested, your losses would accelerate, and whoever the winner is has to deal with the contesting party.

Yes. that's probably true, although of course that depends on your opponent not WINNING Challenges that allow them an advantage in one way or another. If you lose a Challenge that would have normally cost a Sphere, and because you're occupying it'd take two Spheres, their price could be that you will REMOVE your forces from at least two of their Spheres, and so on.

Hey Ryk,

Would you pm me?  I have a theory that I want to run by you in case you are planning on doing something like my theory in a latter book if it gets written.  I would like the pm so I don't accidentally post spoilers for an upcoming book.  Thanks,

Duncan

Heh. You found my email and asked directly. And so you could post it here anyway if you want just for amusement.

Or start a new thread on "Theories and Guesses". 🙂

I found it after I checked the forums.  I have it bookmarked.  Besides if you were doing/planning something like what I was thinking of then I didn't want to spoil it for the others.  If you don't mind me sharing it I will go ahead and post it here.

I don't mind people posting guesses. Even if they come close (possible -- there are those who know enough about the Arenaverse and me to perhaps figure it all out) I don't have to confirm or deny!

An interesting idea, but no, the first Faith Initiate Guide and the First Shadeweaver gained their powers in-Arena as part of what the Voidbuilder(s) intended to have happen.
