Polychrome: Chapter 2

Well, it's time to meet our OTHER protagonist...         Chapter 2.      I snapped the computer case shut and locked down the screws. "All set."      "Thanks, Erik." Lisa said with a tired smile. "You didn't have to –"      "No, I didn't, but it wasn't a big deal and you need that thing running tomorrow. Don't we finish the next big volume for State Legal this week?"      "Yes, you're right. But –"      "No buts." I was actually exhausted myself – repairing three machines that had chosen to, as an English [ Continue reading... ]

Polychrome: Chapter 1

With the prologues out of the way, we get to the real start of the story...     Chapter 1.      They're close now.      She was astounded by the speed. Over cloudscape and through brilliant ways of the sky she had met few that were her equal and none her master; even her own father could not match her in fleetness of foot across the skies.      But these were no natural beings, not even in the sense that she, a princess of Faerie, could be considered natural. Forged from spirits of dark power and bound in chains of [ Continue reading... ]

Polychrome: Prologue 1 and Prologue 2

Just as I do with my other books, I will be snippeting pieces of Polychrome on Fridays every week until my projected release day in November.      Prologue 1.        The gray Dove, slightly larger than the others, sat silent on the branch, a branch tinged with the color of twilight shadows and pre-dawn sky. Despite the mildness of the day, the perfect time of near-awakening of the world, it did not join with its brethren in the cooing, mournful yet soft and comforting sounds that such birds usually made. The other doves [ Continue reading... ]

Just For Fun: My Top Ten Heroes

For long-term readers of mine, this list may be as notable for who isn't on it as for who is. The decisionmaking process on this was… difficult, to say the least. In the end, I had to go with my immediate gut reactions and leave out many, many heroes who certainly rank high in my personal pantheon. Do not take the absence of a character to mean I don't appreciate them as a great hero and example; there are many such who simply don't quite reach this top ten… or who might reach it on a different day.   #10: [ Continue reading... ]

Just for Fun: The Annotated Evil Overlord, Part 1

Back in the days when Usenet was the largest discussion forum on the Net, there was a discussion of all the things that an EFFECTIVE Evil Overlord had to do -- and NOT do -- that were often overlooked, or directly worked AGAINST, in many works of fiction. It became a thread of discussion titled "If I Am Ever the Evil Overlord...", and various people (including myself) contributed to it as it grew. Eventually it (and its successors/companion pieces such as If I Am Ever the Hero, If I Am Ever the Sidekick, etc.) was gathered together and [ Continue reading... ]

On My Shelves: Namesake

A little less than two years ago, something startling and magical began: a webcomic called Namesake. I discovered it very shortly after it started, and it immediately became one of my favorites – shortly thereafter becoming my absolute favorite webcomic, even outracing the formidable competition of Schlock Mercenary (which I will be discussing in another entry) and Girl Genius (ditto). As they recently released, through Kickstarter, a hardcopy of the first volume, Namesake is now truly On My Shelves.        Namesake is the [ Continue reading... ]
